The nursery, Inverleith Pond

Phew – found the missing six ducklings. They are still titchy but looking more duck shaped and less chick shaped. Still cheeping like little radars. Mum looking wary at my approach. Not surprising, apparently gulls have a nasty way of eating chicks. Is that what happened to the moorhen chicks? To the swan’s eggs? The tall yellow irises are almost over. It is so peaceful at the nursery end of the pond. The coot chicks are big enough to go into the adult pond now. Some optimistic bird has built an elegant moss lined nest just below the board walk – not terribly private. Noticed she had interwoven bits of litter with the grasses and twigs. Very modern.
